Each Friday night I curate a creative series at Mondrian Soho called Beyond the Bookcase. I started the series as a way to bring art and music together, to give a platform to the many talented artists out there looking to share their work.
Choosing which artists to showcase is an art in itself. I look online, visit my favorite music venues, search instagram and I ask sources I trust for recommendations. The best are chosen to exhibit their work, or perform their music. This past Friday featured art by Angela China and music by Brian Dunne.
I first discovered Brian Dunne when I stopped into Rockwood Music Hall a few months ago. It’s one of my favorite music venues to play and also to discover new artists. With a line up of numerous musicians each night, seven days a week, you never know what you will find. Sometimes you hear music that is good, often times you hear unpolished work from artists still working to find their voice. Every once in awhile you hear something great, something that moves you. The songwriting, music, vocals and band all come together to create a powerful energy that stays with you long after you leave. Brian Dunne has this kind of talent and when I saw him perform, I knew I had to get him to play at Beyond the Bookcase. One of my favorite songs is Brooklyn Bridge but I encourage you to look him up and listen to more than just this song.
Join us every Friday night at 9pm for Beyond the Bookcase at Mondrian Soho.
